TESCAN Enters the STEM Arena and Integrates a DECTRIS Hybrid-Pixel Electron Detector

This November, TESCAN ORSAY HOLDING a.s., a global supplier and manufacturer of microCT’s, scanning electron microscopes, and focused ion beam systems, launched its first Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope (STEM). DECTRIS is proud to be part of this debut and see its QUADRO detector fully integrated into TESCAN’s new solution.

Meet TESCAN TENSOR, a fully-integrated, precession-assisted, analytical Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope (STEM).

TENSOR is a newly launched, fully-integrated, precession-assisted, analytical STEM that has been developed by TESCAN ORSAY HOLDING a.s. Its key capability is scanning diffraction imaging, which is enhanced – among other features – by the speed and sensitivity of a hybrid-pixel direct electron detector, DECTRIS QUADRO. It is also the first fruit of a close collaboration between the two companies, DECTRIS and TESCAN.

DECTRIS is extremely proud to be part of TESCAN’s debut on the (S)TEM stage and excited to see its hybrid-pixel technology fully integrated into the system.

“TESCAN has done outstanding work leveraging DECTRIS QUADRO’s single-electron-counting capabilities, its speed and sensitivity, and its radiation hardness. The reliability of this detector, combined with the stable 360° integration, is a dream combination for 4D STEM applications”, says Dr. Luca Piazza, Product Manager Electron Microscopy at DECTRIS. “We are thrilled about our collaboration with TESCAN, and we are looking forward to seeing TENSOR succeed”.

Petr Mareš, Product Manager for TEM/STEM, TESCAN ORSAY HOLDING a.s., adds: “Direct electron detection takes scanning diffraction imaging capability to the next level, due to its impressive sensitivity and speed. Furthermore, hybrid-pixel technology by DECTRIS excels in radiation hardness, which is a key feature, considering the amount of electron beam current we put on the detector. The collaboration with DECTRIS allowed us to integrate the QUADRO detector from the ground up – achieving perfect synchronization of scanning with diffraction imaging, EDS acquisition, electron-beam precession, beam blanking, and on-the-fly 4D STEM acquisition. To unlock the true potential of 4D STEM, we aimed to enable fast and precise acquisition, which we achieved by thoroughly integrating this technology into the TENSOR solution”.

The launch took place on November 8, 2022 and will be followed by a number of activities and publications, from technical webinars to application notes. So, stay tuned, and don’t miss out on the news from TESCAN and DECTRIS!
